About the Artist

The Power of Music

When asked what his music is about, Poppa T says, “It's all about Love! Now that can be someone in your life, or the birds in the trees, or material things such as holidays or cars. We all love something.

“I try in my song writing to answer that question, I write about everyday life. If I can make you smile or dance, the song has worked.

“This is my fix, I get awesome satisfaction, out of someone enjoying my songs, even if you just tap a foot - Result! If you quote one of my lyrics, I’m in heaven”.

Poppa T started song writing in 2019 and attended a song writing retreat run by Chris Difford of Squeeze.

“I spent a week in a country house just outside Glastonbury with a group of people from home and abroad ranging from me, as a rookie to professional singers and musicians. It was a brilliant week and I received so much support. We wrote songs each day and performed them in the evening.

“We still keep in touch with each other, and sometimes co-write a song or two.

“My song writing continues with Talent is Timeless which is a brilliant concept started by professional singer songwriter Saskia Griffiths Moore. It's a promotion of people over the age of 50 in the music industry. Twelve of us got together for a couple of months and wrote songs which will be released in August. Saskia did a brilliant job of herding the songwriters down the path and stopping them from going astray.

“Imagine a singing border collie controlling her sheep! She kept us all on the song writing track”.

Poppa T plays acoustic guitar and banjo. “I made my own electric guitar. It was a gift from my wife. It was a great experience, and you learn about guitars and how they work. I can't play these instruments of course”, Poppa T says drily, “Song writing is my strength, but I do try!”

The nice things some people say:

Fast Kid: “His song writing and vocal delivery conjure up a young Ray Davies! Brill!” - Mick Grant

Rollercoaster: “A great tale, written and sung in the style of Syd Barrett! Ace!” - Mick Grant

Walk a Mile in my Shoes: “Great Song” - Chris Difford

The Power of Music

What do you call a sad strawberry?

A blueberry!

In his music, Poppa T likes to make everyone a strawberry, with his relatable lyrics and danceable melodies.

Poppa T tells us, “I'm inspired by visual aspects of life. I would draw cartoons that place people in funny situations and send them a card, birthdays usually. So it is a natural bridge for me to write songs. It's great for your mental health - you should give it a go”.
