‘Walk A Mile In My Shoes’ was in aid of ‘Halton Young Carers’.
I was inspired to write and record this song after giving young carer, Nathan Brady, a day out in the airport as a prize for winning a poetry competition.
Once a year I run a ‘young carers day’ to give the kids a well earned break which consists of a flight, and tours around the hangars and Liverpool’s air traffic control towers at Liverpool Airport, organised by the rotary e-club of aviation.
There are 700,000 young carers in the UK, in Halton there are 700, some of them as young as 5 years old and going up to 18 years. A special day out for young carers happens each year on the third weekend in May in all parts of the world.
The song is a powerful ballad featuring the voice of both mine and granddaughter Olivia, 8 years old, who is representing the voices of the young carers.
“Walk a Mile in my Shoes'' is an insight into the challenges that they face, having to manage their home lives whether that’s by looking after siblings or parents who have challenges of their own.
Garry Fowler from Halton Carers Centre ran a painting competition to design the album artwork. “Walk a mile in my shoes'' is accompanied with two other songs written by Poppa T.
”When you’re a kid you should be out with your mates having fun - but through my charity work I realised that that’s not an opportunity everyone has. ‘Walk A Mile In My Shoes’ invites you to look at life from the perspective of a young carer for a moment”.
